What Needs to Happen before Biodiesel Cars will Take Off in America?

Let’s face it – when it comes to biodiesel cars, America has been traditionally left behind. Perhaps it is a product of our consistently low gasoline prices, or maybe it is because American car designers have no idea what they are doing when they make a new diesel engine – but whatever the case, America needs to buck up and get on the ball with regards to biodiesel fuel powered cars. Unfortunately a few aspects of our society have to change before we are willing to go the distance and switch from our beloved gasoline to alternative diesel fuels.

The first thing that must happen if our country is to switch to biodiesel instead of regular gasoline is that gas prices have to shoot up and stay up. If gas prices become as high as they are in many other countries in the world, then it will be a hard sale for car manufacturers to continue selling gasoline cars – and they will promptly begin to market cars that run on diesel instead. At this point though, because gas is still so cheap and works so well, there is no point for many car manufacturers to even try and market diesel powered cars in our country.

The other thing that must occur if America ever wants to get rid of its reliance on gasoline and replace it with biodiesel is that we need to pioneer new biodiesel creation techniques. If the price of gas will not go high enough to make people stop buying it, then biodiesel prices must go low enough that everyone will wish they had a car that could run on it. People will ask their favorite automotive companies to make biodiesel powered cars, the companies will realize that they have a market for them, and cars that run on regular diesel and biodiesel will begin to flood the market.

Only if one of these two events occurs will we ever see an influx of biodiesel cars in America – until then, we are stuck with gasoline.
